Born on April 28, 1758, James Monroe stood at the crossroads of a young nation’s growing pains and power.

A veteran of the Revolution, a statesman of vision, and the last of the Founding Fathers to serve as president, Monroe helped forge an identity for America that stretched beyond borders and across oceans.

His name lives on in doctrine — bold, defiant, and protective — warning monarchies to stay their hand and shield a hemisphere in the name of liberty. But Monroe’s legacy is more than a policy: it is one of quiet strength, unity, and enduring resolve.

This poem honors the man who journeyed through war and peace with purpose and gave the nation a compass to stand in the world.

MONROE: Republic's Shield

Journeyed forth through war and peace,

A nation’s growth he sought to lease.

Marching west with vision grand,

Empires warned to stay their hand.

Strength in doctrine, bold and wise.

Monarchs feared his stern reprise.

Oceans wide, yet firm he stood,

New world free, as he had vowed.

Republic’s shield, his lasting mark,

Over lands both bright and dark.

Ever honored, ever stark.
