Sunday Reads...

An irregular round-up of interesting reads.  Most of these made me go "hmmmmm," none of them imply concurrence:

Quote of the Day:

How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it.”  Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments

  • Fascinating review of 800 state-based public policies: Durable (long-lasting) policy appears to be those enacted via direct democracy.

  • Intergenerational social mobility is directly correlated with economic freedom.  No surprise but always affirming to see the evidence match the worldview.

  • primer on ESGinvesting.”

Decline of reading
  • A handy round-up of protocols to improve your slumber.

  • Revisiting the myth of radicalization.

  • Goldman Sachs sees interesting times ahead.

  • Evidence suggests that money matters less than commonly thought regarding happiness.

  • Insights from firm profits post-Covid: “If there is any anomaly to note, it should probably be that the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has been characterized by a persistent weakness in the profitability of middle-sized publicly traded firms.”

  • Alarming trends in self-harm amongst “Gen Z.”

  • After-tax, the top 1% variance on income “inequality” is… flat.  Since the 1960s, things have been stuck in the status quo.  However, don’t let these inconvenient facts disrupt your narrative!
