On April 17th, we mark the birth of one of America’s most formidable financial architects—John Pierpont Morgan. Born in 1837, J.P. Morgan was more than a banker; he was a force of stability, strategy, and vision in a rapidly industrializing world. He helped shape the foundation of modern American finance, rescuing markets from collapse, consolidating industries, and championing cultural institutions with equal fervor. His influence—often subtle, sometimes controversial—remains woven into the very fabric of American capitalism.
"J.P. MORGAN | A Market Symphony.” It reflects the harmony of commerce, the pulse of progress, and the enduring mark of a man who conducted it all behind the scenes. This poem is featured in Red, White & Verse and is available here.

J.P. MORGAN | A Market Symphony
The lifeblood of America in commerce does pulse,
In the rhythm of free trade, progress does convulse.
From the east to the west, in every city and expanse,
The heartbeat of exchange, in freedom’s dance.
John Pierpont Morgan, in Hartford’s heart did start,
Born in spring of ’37, he played a vital part.
A financier, a banker, in America’s grand chart,
His unseen hand in industry, a master of the art.
From a family of wealth, his path was firmly cast,
In the shadows of his father’s bank, he learned his trade so vast.
Then with strategic acumen, a future he forecast,
Creating J.P. Morgan & Company, its influence unsurpassed.
An architect of industry, with a banker’s quiet might,
Through mergers and acquisitions, he set the markets right.
Forming corporate giants, in finance’s great height,
His unseen hand, a guiding light, by both day and night.
When panic struck in 1907 and public trust did sway,
Morgan stood steadfast, holding fear at bay.
With careful moves and strategies, he kept chaos away,
His calming influence restored faith in economy’s fray.
Yet beyond the realm of finance, Morgan’s passions lay,
In art and culture’s nurturing, his generous heart held sway.
A vast collection of fine art, his legacy on display,
To institutions of culture, his wealth generously gave way.
In Rome’s embrace, he breathed his last in 1913’s spring,
His legacy, a rich tapestry, to life he did bring.
Through industry consolidation, his influence would ring,
In the annals of American commerce, of him we still sing.
In the market’s symphony, each note played with grace,
Needs met, services rendered, in each marketplace.
With no coercion present, each decision face to face,
In the spirit of Morgan, we embrace this pace.
From the threads of industry, a nation’s fabric weaves,
Echoing Morgan’s vision, in what free trade achieves.
His unseen hand still guides, in what the market believes,
In the heartbeat of commerce, America breathes.
