THE HERO CODE: Lessons learned from lives well lived | Admiral William McRaven, Ret., Grand Central Publishing 176p.

Trite and stale in prose, a platitudinous approach to the habits and conduct that makes a hero. His 10-point credo builds upon his (more) excellent “Make Your Bed.” His cardinal maximums cover courage, humility, sacrifice, integrity, compassion, perseverance, duty, humor, and forgiveness.

The only chapter that I think McRaven ill-defines is “humor.” Humor is central to leadership, teamwork, and thriving in a group context. However, he fails to distinguish the aspect of humor that requires graciousness with its unique qualities. Other than this miss, it’s a straightforward, quick tour of a framework to live by.
